Why Strength & Conditioning?

Strength training has a bit of reputation of being only for those trained athletes and influencers  who cover your insta feed with endless selfies of sculpted bodies and shredded abs. But this is a misconception that I am working hard to change, and I want you all to know that Strength & Conditioning is for EVERYONE. 

So what are the benefits?

  • Control body fat - strength training asks alot of your muscles, so you burn lots of calories - and will continue to burn extra calories after your workout has finished! Winner!
  • Improve bone health - as we age we naturally begin to lose bone density. Strenght training is proven to increase blood flow to your bones, improving bone density & reducing the risk of osteoporosis. 
  • Improve body tone - a tone physique comes from building muscle & reducing body fat. A combination of S&C and cardio is perfect for this!
  • Reduce risk of injury - stronger joints and improved flexibility from strength training are key to keeping you injury free!
  • Build functional strength - whether you're recovering from injury or simply struggling with daily tasks, building a strong foundation will help you take the next step in your health and fitness. 

busting the myths of S&C

Something I hear all too often is "Strength & Conditioning sounds like too much for me". I'm here to tell you that it doesn't mean having to grab an olympic bar or chunky dumbbell, nor does it necessarily need to involve big weights. Instead, strength gains can be made through bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, suspension training, cable machines, or indeed freeweights and bars. We all have to start somewhere and building a foundation of functional strength is something we can all do. 

some classic myths/excuses...

  • 'I'll bulk up' - This requires very specific training  and eating ALOT. It's especially hard for women as they lack testosterone which is key for bulking. If you want to bulk, that's great and we can create a programme to help you do that. If not, don't worry about it! 
  • 'I'm not strong enough' - We all have to start somewhere, and we can all build strength and improve body condition - it's all relative to our own bodies!
  • 'I'm too old' - strength training can help people of all ages - even if your goal is just to be able to get out of a chair without using your hands. It's never too late!!
  • 'It'll make my cardio training harder' - gaining muscle doesn't make it harder to move at speed - it will give you POWER and joint support to keep you injury free and improve your times!
  • 'It's just for the pro's - seeing athletes on social media is intimidating - but even they were beginners once!
